Bulging or Protruding Disc
Pain doesn't have to control your daily life. Find relief with chiropractic care.
What is a Bulging or Protruding Disc?
A bulging or protruding disc happens when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes through its tough outer layer, which can put pressure on nearby nerves. This may cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs, depending on the location of the affected disc. In some cases, people experience no symptoms at all. This condition most commonly occurs in the lower back but can also affect the neck.
How do you treat Bulging or Protruding Disc?
We use chiropractic adjustments to relieve pressure on the spine and help improve mobility. Lumbar decompression therapy is also used to gently stretch the spine, creating space and reducing nerve irritation. Modifying activities that worsen pain is important to avoid further disc strain.
Is there anything I can do for Bulging or Protruding Disc at home?
Doing stretching and strengthening exercises designed to support the lower back can help improve flexibility and stability. Applying ice for 10-15 minutes can reduce swelling, while warm moist heat for 8-10 minutes can help relax muscles. Massage, electrical muscle stimulation, or a TENS unit may also provide relief. Over-the-counter pain relievers, prescription medications, steroid injections, or epidurals may be recommended for more severe pain. In rare cases, surgery may be necessary.
