Disc Degeneration
Pain doesn't have to control your daily life. Find relief with chiropractic care.
What is Disc Degeneration?
Disc degeneration happens when the intervertebral discs that cushion and support the spine start to break down over time. This is a natural part of aging, as the discs lose water and elasticity, making them less effective at absorbing shock. However, factors like injury, heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, poor posture, and genetics can speed up this process. Symptoms may include neck or back pain when sitting, standing, or walking, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and numbness or tingling in the arms or legs.
How do you treat Disc Degeneration?
We use chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal mobility and reduce pain, along with cervical traction and lumbar decompression therapy to relieve pressure on the affected discs. Modifying activities that aggravate the pain can also help slow the progression of degeneration.
Is there anything I can do for Disc Degeneration at home?
Strengthening the core muscles can help support the spine and reduce strain on the discs. Improving posture and maintaining a healthy weight can also prevent further degeneration. Over-the-counter pain relievers, steroid injections, and physical therapy may help manage symptoms. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
