What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder causes pain and tenderness in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles and ligaments. It may be accompanied by clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth and can sometimes make chewing or speaking uncomfortable. Common causes include teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw injuries, arthritis, and general wear and tear on the joint.

How do you treat TMJ Disorder?

We use chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy to relieve tension in the jaw and surrounding muscles, helping to improve movement and reduce pain. Avoiding activities that worsen pain, such as excessive gum chewing or clenching the jaw, can also help.

Is there anything I can do for TMJ Disorder at home?

Wearing a mouth guard at night can help prevent teeth grinding and reduce strain on the jaw. Applying ice or heat therapy may relieve discomfort, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage symptoms. Physical therapy can improve jaw function, and in severe cases, jaw surgery may be required.
